Wedding dress codes can be confusing, and even more so when it’s a destination wedding. Luckily, as destination wedding planners, we have a lot of experience with this! While there are some rules that will always be true – you should never wear white to a wedding – others become more flexible when you’re celebrating in the sand. Whether you’re hosting a destination wedding and looking for advice on how to guide your guests or a guest getting ready to pack your bags, we hope this guide can provide some help in choosing the perfect outfit for your destination wedding!
Five of Our Favorite Women’s Looks
Something Blue
One of our favorite outfit trends for tropical destination weddings is wearing “something blue.” This nod to the old tradition (something borrowed, something blue, something old, and something new) is not only fun but goes great with a tropical background in photos. And for those of you who would normally reach for a little black dress, swap it out for a sleek navy to add a nautical flair.
Beachy Boho
We love the beachy boho trend that has become popular in the past few years. Light, airy elements with earth-tone colors are right at home on a tropical island. Flowy maxi dresses and floral prints in beige, mauve, and sage are all great options.
Tropical Elegance
If you want a bold, fun wedding palette, Tropical Elegance is the perfect dress code. Think big prints and bright colors! For this dress code, we see a lot of classic Hawaiian print and Lily Pulitzer pieces, but if you’re not into prints, you can also opt for a solid color like yellow, orange, or bright pink! The key to this dress code is avoiding black, as you’ll stick out like a sore thumb.
Resort Casual
Resort Casual is a term you’ll see a lot for tropical weddings, especially at laid-back all-inclusive resorts. But what does it actually mean? Think relaxed silhouettes but elevated pieces. A flowy knee-length or midi dress in linen or cotton is a great option when paired with some nice sandals.
Footwear
We have said it before – wear comfortable shoes! Destination weddings are often spread between separate areas of the resort, so you’ll be doing a bit of walking. Opt for a small kitten heel, wedges, or platforms for comfort and ease while walking across different terrain. And save the flip-flops and birks for pool days – we still want to look nice!
